Be The Director: The Monthly Round Up
A round up on all things personal storytelling, in case you missed it
Are you happy with your own story yet? Have you changed how you tell it?
We’re at the end of our first month on SubStack, exploring how to ‘Be The Director’ of your own story. We’ve written a lot, spoken to experts, and experimented with our own methods.
In the name of helping our readers to ‘LookUP’, we thought it would be useful to have a roundup of all of this months pieces in one place for you to explore and come back to you in one handy resource:
(1) Be The Director: Why so many of us struggle to tell our own story
Our first piece dug into the 3 big problems of why we struggle with our own storytelling, and your three weapons to counter those problems. Free to all our subscribers, this gives you the full benefit of our reading, some teaser elements of our expert interviews, and a framework to tell your story differently.
Find the piece here:
(2) Be the Director: Build your StoryBoard
For our paid subscribers, they received the full explanation of how to use our framework; and also got a free 90 minute session with Matthew and Caroline and a small group of peers to work through the framework and problem solve together. You can still sign up and gain access to the explanation here:
(3) We had 3 expert interviews
Our first was Stefanie Sword-Williams, founder of F**k Being Humble, and self-promotion extraordinaire:
Our second was Mark Leruste, CEO of StoryCast, global keynote speaker and author of ‘Glow In the Dark: How Sharing your Personal Story can Transform your Business and Change Your Life”. Mark is on a quest to get everyone to share their authentic story.
Our last expert of the month was Tracy de Groose, ex MD of Naked and CEO Dentsu, Executive Chair of Newsworks, Deputy Chair of Cancer Research UK and founder of Brilliant Misfits. A renowned storyteller, she reminds us that at the heart of storytelling is the parts of us that don’t quite fit.
(4) The LookUP List: Be The Director of Your Story
Want the full resource list of all of our months work? This one gives you our top 5, but also a full resource list for the best things we read, listened to and saw.
(5) Finally, we tried our own methods
At LookUP we don’t put anything into the world if we haven’t tried it ourselves on our clients, and on our own businesses. This month was no different and both Matthew and Caroline used the framework on their own story. This piece links to both experiences of putting Be The Director into practice.
So that’s it! A jam packed first month. Loads of inspiration and action for all of our subscribers, but full access behind the scenes to our expert interviews, the full framework explanation and our live digital session for our paid subscribers.
Our next month’s focus is The Big Reset: giving Annual Planning a much needed make-over.
It’s an area we’ve both worked in extensively across more businesses than we care to remember, and it’s often found wanting. We’ll dig into 3 problems and their solutions in the next month:
We struggle to see what the future we want in business looks like & get everyone behind the same vision
We think there’s one vision of the future we ware working towards, but what we really need to get to grips with are the levers of change
We don’t know how to get started
Remember to subscribe if you want to get the full content, expert and live experience; and thank you for your support in our first month!
